When the Smurfs are chased through a magical portal by the evil wizard Gargamel, they end up in our world, in the middle of Central Park. With Gargamel trying to capture them, the Smurfs must find a way to get back home.
I always hated the Smurfs as kid (apart from the Christmas album, which I still love. Seriusly. It's not Christmas without it). I refused to watch the cartoon so I wasn't looking forward to the film. But, The Jellyfish wanted to see it so I was forced to make one of those pesky parental sacrfices and sit through it.
Imagine my surprise (and a tiny loss of self-respect) when I found myself enjoying it.
Now, don't get carried away. It's no Bedknobs and Broomsticks but it wasn't completely crap like I'd expected. I'd always hated the way they replaced words with the 'smurf' ('let's get the smurf out of here etc) but there were a couple of moments were they made it work and it was actually funny.
Speaking of making it work, I loved Tim Gunn in this. I'm a fan of Project Runway so seeing Tim in the film was great, especially when he slipped his catchphrase in.
The Jellyfish really enjoyed the Smurfs, which is the most important thing but it's nice that we could both enjoy it.
