A-Z of Writing - F

There is something so exhilarating about finishing a first draft. You've spent months working away, building characters and telling their stories and sometimes it feels like you're getting nowhere. And then you finish. You reach the end. It may not be perfect but you've done it. You've written a book.

Oh, the relief! We won't focus on how much more work there is to do. That first draft is done and you deserve a pat on the back.

How do you feel when you finish a first draft? And do you reward yourself in any way?

  1. I would so love to complete a first draft! I'm very envious!
I think I would reward myself very highly...not sure how - too far away to think about haha!

    1. I used to be exactly the same. I started so many books but none seemed to hold my attention long enough. I remember the first time I completed a first draft. It turned out to be complete rubbish but it felt great that I could get from the beginning to the end.

  2. I take a break for a couple of weeks and generally don't think about it. It's a bit weird because you've been so involved with these characters for so long, but it is a great feeling to have something to work on when you come back to edit!

    1. I do the same, leaving it alone for around a month. I find it easier to spot mistakes after taking a step back.

  3. Finishing a first draft brings a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. I love it. Even better though is finishing the first round of edits. :)
