A-Z of Writing - Z

As in 'in the zone'. I like to write with music in the background. It can be from my own music collection or the radio, which is strange as the talking between the music doesn't bother me but I can't write with the television on as the voices distract me.

I usually write when my children are at school/nursery or they're in bed as I can't concentrate if they're in the same room as they (quite rightly) demand my attention.

So, to get 'in the zone' I need a kid-free room with no television but music in the background.

What do you need to get 'in the zone'?

  1. I'm exactly the same! I always look up at the TV so I always have music & the radio. I also like a candle on my desk.
Loved your A to Z! Well done :))

    1. I don't have a desk (I have a laptop and a sofa) so don't think the candle would be safe!

  2. I always like to write somewhere where there are no distractions, so don't listen to music when I write. I also like to have sweets nearby!

  3. I'm generally a silence person. Music is distracting. Public places with people talking is fine because I can tune that out.

Congrats on making it all the way from A to Z! It's been a fun month.

  4. I need quiet. A little noise is okay - neighborhood or house noises to an extent, etc but I can't write with the TV on or music. Although, I've been thinking of trying it with a playlist for my novel going or something purely instrumental.

  5. I am similar too, when I'm writing blog posts or doing essays for a course or something for work, I generally need to be quiet and door shut on my own, if I'm really concentrating, I can't even listen to music.

Yay, we did it! Well done :)

  7. I do need silence although music is usually inspiring. I usually write when my daughter's at nursery (and from August, I'll have the whole day when she's at school - yippee!) A brisk walk back home from dropping her off gets the blood pumping and allows me to process what I need to work on that day.

Congrats on getting to the finish line!

    1. Sounds exactly like me - I write in the mornings while my youngest daughter is at nursery. In September she'll be going to school full time like her sister so I'll even more time to write.
